Winemaker Tasting: Château de Fosse-Sèche

There are two things you need to know about Anjou's Chåteau de Fosse-Seche:

1. The estate is really old: 650 years, to be exact.

2. They're producing some of the most exciting biodynamic wines in the Loire Valley.

And you can learn a lot more about both this Saturday when we welcome the estate's lead winemaker Guillaume Pire to the shop for a special winemaker tasting!

Fosse-Seche's namesake Château, located in the village of Saumur in the central Loire Valley, was founded by Benedictine monks in the 13th century as an outpost of the St. Nicolas Priory in nearby Montreuil-Bellay. By the 13th century, the estate was already taking advantage of its fertile surroundings to produce wine.

The present-day owners—twin brothers Guillaume and Adrien—have been in charge since only 1998, but have worked to ensure that the vineyards under production and the methods employed at Fosse-Sèche remain firmly connected to the old way of doing things.

It starts with the strictly biodynamic approach to viniculture—reinforced by a surrounding ecological milieu complete with a forest, a wild bird sanctuary, an apiary, and a goat farm—and continues with a meticulous adherence to hand harvesting and thorough sorting.

The result: unique wines that are considered among the best in Saumur.

Guillaume will be pouring 4 of them this weekend—the estate's Chenin Blanc cuvée (Arcane), two vintages of its flagship red (Eolithe), and a brand new sparkling cuvée that you won't want to miss.

(And if you like your wine with a side of history and passion for traditional methods, you'll be right at home.)

See below for more details on these unique, excellent wines, including tasting notes and special pricing.

Chateau de Fosse Vin Mousseux Brut Nature Il Etait Une Fois

A crisp, bright, and aromatic sparkling wine, the Brut Nature is produced naturally, resulting in an excellent mineral drive and a rich expression of Chenin Blanc. Not to be missed!

Chateau de Fosse Seche Saumur Blanc Arcane 2014

A Riesling-like bouquet with mineral, floral and yeasty flavors framing the elegant, ripe and well-concentrated fruit. Very pure, fresh and very elegant on the palate, with an excellent structure and lingering salinity, this is a medium-bodied, precise and very delicate Chenin Blanc from 5- to 16-year-old vines on a pebbly, chalk-free soil on a Jurassic plateau in Brossy. It's already a great drinking pleasure, but can be aged for 10-15, maybe even more years.

Chateau de Fosse Seche Saumur Rouge Eolithe 2014

A lush blend of 95% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon that offers a quintessential expression of the estate's unique jurassic terroir. Its bouquet contains notes of mint, minerals and smoke; on the palate, it's full of vibrant red fruit, dusty tannins, and a pleasing mineral finish.
